State Relay – Takeover Zones

State Relays are a little different and require all team members to adhere to the rules of competition.   In past years we have seen athletes disqualified for a variety of reasons, but mostly with incorrect baton changes or obstructing another team.  Protests are common (and costly) and video evidence can be used to support the case.  Please note: LANSW doesn’t video a race so it is up to parents and helpers to find supportive evidence.

Remember it is the team with the fastest baton that crosses the line is the winner, and the baton changeovers must be executed within the specified takeover zone or disqualification will result i.e. the baton itself must be within the limits of the change area

Below are an extract of the Rules of Compeition for LANSW in respect to some events at State Relays as there are some variances between events.

2. State Relay Championships

 2.7 Takeover Zones

4 x 400m relay

–          The 1st lap will be run entirely in lanes.

–          2nd runners will continue in lanes until the breakline where they may cross to any lane if it is safe to do so.

NB. The breakline shall be an arced line, 5cm wide, across the track, marked at each end by a distinctive marker positioned outside the track. To assist athletes identify the breakline, small cones or prisms, 5cm x 5cm and no more than 15cm high, preferably of a different colour as to the breakline & lane line, shall be placed on the lane line immediately before the intersection of the lane line and the breakline.

–          The 1st runner must stay within their lane and as far as practicable within the takeover zone until all changes have been made.

–           3rd and 4th runners will be placed on the track in the takeover zone in the order their team crosses the 200m mark.

NB. The breakline shall be an arced line, 5cm wide, across the track, marked at each end by a distinctive marker positioned outside the track. To assist athletes identify the breakline, small cones or prisms, 5cm x 5cm and no more than 15cm high, preferably of a different colour as to the breakline & lane line, shall be placed on the lane line immediately before the intersection of the lane line and the breakline.

 4 x 200m relays

–          Start to be on 800m staggers.

 –          The 1st runners are to run in lanes until the breakline, where they may cross to any lane if it is safe to do so. Witches hats should be used to help direct the runners into the takeover area.

NB. The breakline shall be an arced line, 5cm wide, across the track, marked at each end by a distinctive marker positioned outside the track. To assist athletes identify the breakline, small cones or prisms, 5cm x 5cm and no more than 15cm high, preferably of a different colour as to the breakline & lane line, shall be placed on the lane line immediately before the intersection of the lane line and the breakline.

–          1st change at 200m marks to be in the order of the lane draw for that event.

–          2nd change – ‘pack start’ formation at the ‘start/finish line’.

–          3rd change – ‘pack start’ formation at the ‘200m line’.

–          Runners at the 2nd and 3rd changes are to be placed on the track, in the order of the incoming runners as they enter the straight.

4 x 100m relays

In the 4 x 100m Relay a 10 metre acceleration zone is allowed. Competitors are permitted to make a check mark on the track within their own lane, however adhesive tape only may be used.

 

Middle Distance Relay Junior

–          Start to be on 300m /1500 pack start line.

–          The 1st runners must be the U/8 competitors who will run 700m. Athletes may cross to any lane once the gun has gone and it is safe to do so.

–          2nd , 3rd & 4th runners will be placed on the track in the takeover zone in the order their team member crosses the 200m mark for the second time.

 

Middle Distance Relay Senior

–          Start to be on the 800m stagers.

–          The 1st runners are to run in lanes until the breakline where they may cross to any lane if it is safe to do so.

NB. The breakline shall be an arced line, 5cm wide, across the track, marked at each end by a distinctive marker positioned outside the track.
